Get Warm And Save With Your Electric Blanket
Saving money on heating costs is in the back of almost every consumer’s mind come winter time and doing so without having to succumb to the cold is obviously ideal.
Enter in the age old money saver; the electric blanket. For years this device synonymous with a rocking chair and a roaring fire has been keeping people warm while allowing them to turn down the heat and turn up the savings.
But as you are probably aware, electric blankets can pose serious safety hazards and become warmer than you could ever imagine.
Since winter is in its peak form, Stuart Lieberman wrote, “Electric Blanket Safety” and published it February 1, 2007 on Realty Times and provided a few ways to ensure your electric blanket kept you warm and safe this winter.
“You can save money with an electric blanket because you are heating only that part of the house that needs to be heated -- the part that immediately surrounds you. And they are comfortable, which is nice to have on a chilly morning.”
It is obvious that these blankets pose hazards, particularly for fire and it is not difficult to keep them safe. Still, many people neglect their electric blankets and could end up literally playing with fire.
“For this reason, some reports suggest that you only use electric blankets that have been approved by nationally recognized testing agencies (like Underwriters Laboratories, Inc.). It is also recommended that you use an electric blanket for no more than ten years. After ten years, statistically they seem to represent a greater risk.”
You know when you have a favorite blanket since you were a certain age and it becomes your “teddy” and grows an emotional and nostalgic attachment to you for , well, ever…do not make that mistake with an electric blanket.
Lieberman compiled some other safety tips he gathered from various sources:
“Replace any electric blanket that is worn or torn. Turn your electric blanket off when not in use and before you go to sleep (unless the blanket is intended to be used otherwise). Don't use the blankets in any manner or combination that will cause excessive heat. This can lead to burns, fires or both. Don't wash an electric blanket as this can cause malfunctions. Follow cleaning instructions exactly. If the blanket looks damaged, don't use it; if it is wet, don't use it.”
Some people suggest that extensive use of an electric blanket can cause serious illness such as cancer but no studies have been concluded that proves this theory.
“Therefore, if you use an electric blanket, you should be aware that it might increase your chances of becoming ill. It is suggested that you review the available literature and draw your own conclusions about this subject.”
Electric blankets can really be a money saver especially if everyone in the household owns one because you can turn your thermostat down significantly. And they are extremely comfortable.
But practice safety first at all costs because even the biggest monthly savings is not worth having to deal with an accident caused by negligence.
