Some Diy Mistakes To Avoid

The do-it-yourself craze seems to be taking over the world as we know it. Suddenly, every home owner believes they are a professional contractor or interior designer.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with that.

There is a lot of joy and personal satisfaction that comes out of completing a home improvement project, but there are also a lot of mistakes and mishaps that could occur along the way as well.

That is why it is important for zealous homeowners to do their research and maybe even take some classes at their local home improvement store before they embark on a DIY home improvement project, regardless of how easy or small the task at hand may be.

A February 7, 2007 article by Elizabeth Weintraub of about.com, “Top DIY mistakes,” discusses some common mistakes that many homeowners make when completing a home improvement project.

“Every home improvement project or fixer rehab has its ups and downs, and there are plenty of mistakes to go around. Nobody is immune. But avoiding costly mistakes involves more than memorizing catchy-but-important phrases such as ‘Measure Twice, Cut Once,’ or ‘Lefty-Loosey, Righty-Tighty.’ One crucial trick: You may learn from your own mistakes, but it’s better to learn from the mistakes of others.”

The first mistake that countless of homeowners make when doing a project themselves is not researching any codes for the property or permits that may be required, which has caused some major problems for many people.

“Many DIYers shy away from obtaining permits because they worry about the expense or think they don't need a permit. Some cities issue permits based on political reasons, and some may appear unnecessary, but get a permit anyway, because it's against the law if you refuse to comply and it's required.”

Some other common mistakes that homeowners make, that happen in virtually every size project is not planning everything out in advance and spending too much over budget.

What many people do not realize is that these two aspects go hand in hand. By planning in advance (meaning everything from the specific days different projects will be done to the exact supplies needed) you will inavertedly create a budget for yourself.

Another huge mistake that DIYers make is those who take on jobs that are extremely complicated and that they are not qualified for in any sense. This just opens the door for injuries, wasted money and incredibly botched jobs that only expensive professionals can fix.

“If you're afraid of heights or unsteady in high places, don't install a roof. Life is short and then you die. Hire somebody else to do it. Before you tackle a job, think about the job from its inception all the way through to its completion. You don't want to reach the halfway mark and discover you can't finish.”

“Some projects require more than one person. It's hard to hang drywall on a ceiling by yourself, even with a dead man prop. Pay attention to the weight you lift; it may wreck havoc on your back or throw you off balance.”

Basically, when you do a project by yourself or with the help of other inexperienced friends or family members just be sure your research the project and all of its aspects in advance and use the highest safety precautions possible.
